The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park was selected as one of the sites to be featured in the ATB series, which began in 2010. The series aimed to highlight the diverse natural and historic treasures found throughout the United States.

The reverse (back) of the Cumberland Gap 5-ounce silver coin features a depiction of a frontiersman gazing across the Cumberland Gap, representing the historic role the gap played in westward expansion. The design was created by Barbara Fox and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso. The obverse (front) of the coin showcases the familiar image of George Washington, as seen on other U.S. quarters

The Cumberland Gap 5-ounce silver coin is struck in .999 fine silver, giving it a total silver weight of 5 troy ounces (155.5 grams). It has a diameter of 76.2 millimeters (3 inches) and a thickness of 4.064 millimeters (0.16 inches). The coin has edge lettering indicating its weight and purity.
